You can consider an element as a field definition. An element is re-usable and can be used in multiple parts of the BOM. For example you will see "Description" occurs in multiple parts of the structure.
The properties of the element determine what a user can do within the BOM Editing screen. It also allows you to define a list of values which can be assigned to the element. These values are stored in the BOM Lists screen.
